Even if your new apartment looks clean, it's worth cleaning before you unpack. You have access to empty rooms—take advantage of it. This is the easiest time to deep clean since you won't have to move furniture.
Why Clean Before Moving In?
- Empty rooms are easy: No furniture to move around
- Fresh start: Begin with your own clean slate
- You don't know what's there: Previous tenant's cleaning may be inadequate
- Document condition: Photo any issues before your stuff arrives
Supplies to Bring
Pack these separately so they're accessible on move-in day:
- All-purpose cleaner
- Glass cleaner
- Toilet bowl cleaner
- Microfiber cloths
- Paper towels
- Scrub brush and sponges
- Broom and dustpan (or vacuum)
- Mop or Swiffer
- Garbage bags
- Rubber gloves

Document Everything
Before and during cleaning, photograph:
- Any existing damage (scratches, stains, holes)
- Appliance conditions
- Walls, floors, and ceilings
- Anything that doesn't look right
Email these photos to yourself (creates timestamp) and send to landlord noting existing conditions. This protects your security deposit when you move out.
If Time Is Limited
Focus on these essentials:
- Kitchen cabinets and refrigerator (where food goes)
- Bathroom toilet and tub/shower (hygiene)
- Floors throughout (will be covered with furniture soon)
- Closet shelves and floors
You can do remaining cleaning after you've moved in and settled.
After Unpacking
Once you're moved in:
- Vacuum again (moving creates dust)
- Clean areas you couldn't access before
- Set up your cleaning routine
- Establish supply storage
Timing Tip
If possible, get access a day before moving day for cleaning. Trying to clean while movers are waiting is stressful and rushed. A dedicated cleaning session ensures it's done properly.
